Media solutions are no longer simply a matter of content. Content such as image, video, or text are just aspects of a media solution that can be produced and delivered in a myriad of ways. Media is about the distribution of content in a manner that can be quickly recognized, responded to, recalled, and/or manipulated. Different forms of media, such as hypertext, digital cinema, digital audio, and electronic books, are capable of providing the same type of content. Some media, such as electronic books, are also capable of presenting content in a manner that can be quickly recognized, responded to, recalled, and/or manipulated. However, conventional techniques of managing media are still limited in their ability to communicate in a manner that can be quickly recognized, responded to, recalled, and/or manipulated.
An electronic book is a digital text that is delivered in a manner similar to a traditional book. In this case, the media is typically a text file with associated graphics (e.g., cover art, back cover, chapter title, page and line numbers) and multimedia (e.g., sound and video). In this regard, an electronic book may be a digital document that can be digitally rendered in one or more of a number of different formats, including, for example, a PDF file, EPUB file, MOBI file, HTML file, CHM file, PDB file, ZPI file, and PURL file. When viewed in an EPUB file, the electronic book is displayed in a book-like manner on an EPUB-compliant e-reader or other electronic device (such as a personal computer or mobile device).
An electronic book can also be managed with media objects, which are described below.
In order to make electronic books readily accessible and transportable, there is a need to create a single file, referred to as a book package, which contains all the components of an electronic book. Since an electronic book consists of a variety of media objects, such as text, graphics, images, sound, animation, video and the like, the book package must be able to accommodate all the various components of the electronic book in a single file. The book package must also be able to organize the various components in such a way that they can be arranged in a manner that is accessible and recognizable to the reader. A book package is different from a collection of individual media objects in that a book package is a description of the electronic book, whereas a collection of individual media objects, such as a directory.
